Restoration

At any given time, there will be follies and complete parks undergoing restoration - here we feature some currently under scaffold:

Hardwick Park, Sedgefield, County Durham, is currently undergoing a complete restoration.  The Temple of Minerva has been almost completely rebuilt, The Gothic Ruin has had its tower rebuilt, the lakes have been dredged and refilled, the Gothic Bridge and Tuscan Alcove have been restored and the Gothic seat shown here has been rebuilt.   Paths have been restored and planting has begun.  It's beginning to look very good..
Hardwick Temple

Hadley Castle, Telford. This old mill buidling has recently been restored into a handsome house called Mill House.  It was once a windmill, then a water mill, then it had battlements added and stood at the entrance to GKN Sankeys works for a long time. The works walls were also battlemented and the whole factory was known as Hadley Castle. Some local folk think it has always been just a folly.

Another battlemented windmill at Much Wenlock, Shopshire is currently being restored. This one had battlements added in 1859 when a viewing platform was added for the Olympian games in the adjoing field.

Wentworth Castle, Yorkshire - The biggest of the garden buildings, Stainborough Castle is undergoing consolidation, and hopefully a stairase will be installed in the tallest of the the remaining towers to enable a viewpoint to be created. Several other temples are undergoing repair including the Rotunda and the Corinthian Temple

On 5 September 2006, work began to dismantle Clavell Tower, Kimmeridge, and move it back 25 metres from the eroding cliff edge.
The tower was carefully dismantled and each stone numbered and recorded to enable it to be rebuilt to its original design. In addition to moving the building, services such as electricity and water will need to be brought in, new stone will need to be carved to replace the missing sections of the parapet and facilities such as a kitchen and bathroom inserted. The project is costing £898,000 which includes training for students from a local college in traditional stone masonry skills, an education programme run with four local primary schools and the production of information boards.

Feb 2008 - the basic structure is now complete - you can watch a video of it here - choose 'Dorset Landmark Restored' on the right hand side

Another Landmark Trust restoration project is Queen Anne's Summerhouse on the Shuttleworth Estate in Bedfordshire.  Funding is desparately needed for this project, so have a look at the Landmark's page and see if you can help.
